Building a Backyard Stream

There are several key elements that go into the building of any backyard stream. Let's take a look at some of those aspects and how they impact the building of a stream.

Location

The first aspect of any stream building project is picking the location. Ideally, you will want to build the stream somewhere that is easily visible from inside the house. This way you can sit and enjoy a view of the stream. Backyard streams are perfect for sloping yards, but it does not have to be a large slope. Even a slight slope makes it easy to install a gently trickling waterfall. However, if your land is flat, you can still build a stream. You can build it up with soil and rocks in an effort to create the slope.

Lining the Stream

When we dig and line the stream, it needs to be deep enough to cover the pump and provide enough water. In many cases, 6 to 12 inches should be deep enough. When lining and figuring out the depth, it is important to make sure that proper precautions are met. Children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water. Installing a child-proof fence is recommended if you have kids.

Add Rocks

Once the stream is dug and lined, we can add rocks. We can lay them around the edges of the stream in a unique and nice way. Or we can also use pebbles if that fits the aesthetic better. These pebbles and rocks can be used to let wildlife in and out of the water, as well as allow for birds to fly down on the rocks and take a sip. Building a stream can also come with the inclusion of a waterfall, which we can also do.

Install the Pump

If you are adding a waterfall, then there will likely need to be an installation of pump. A pump can be placed at the bottom of the stream and will pump the water up to the top of the waterfall. The size of the stream will determine the size of the pump. The longer the stream, the more powerful pump will be required. When we build the stream, we can help to determine if you need a pump and if so which pump is best. Ensuring that you get a stream and waterfall that wows all who see it.

Plants

Planting a range of different plants along the edges of the stream can help it blend into the surrounding landscape. Giving the stream a more natural look, while also attracting all sorts of wildlife, like birds, frogs, dragonflies and more. We can plan and design the plants on the stream to include a nice mix. From shrubs to ornamental grasses to perennials, we will make sure the stream has everything it needs to look great.

Fill Stream with Water

Once everything is set, then it is time to fill the stream with water. During the hot summer months it is important to top of the water, because it will evaporate in the heat.

Add Lights

When you add lights to a stream it ensures you can enjoy the stream at night. We will work you with in the design process to decide what is the best setup for the lighting. An outdoor spotlight can light up the stream in a beautiful way. Submersible LED lights are also a nice touch. There are many tips and tricks to perfectly light up the stream and we can make sure everything looks great.
